THE MEDITERRANEAN SAHARA COLLECTION: MODERN BELLY DANCE

MODERN BELLY DANCE FW'22: This two piece set was designed as a modern street style take on a classic Egyptian Belly Dancer outfit. The design consists of a delicate princess seam top, paired with a marie sleeve adorned in brass coins, and a low-rise pleated skirt with a circular silhouette at the hem. Patterns were made and adjusted numerous times to ensure an exact fit. Inspiration springs from my cultural background, as an Egyptian-American designer, and the desire to transform a narrative. Belly dancers are often reduced to hip-shakers, but this design acts as a power suit that redefines the art of belly dance as a widely-respected craft and gives a sense of normalcy and casual-ness to the belly dancing outfit. Modern belly dance gives the style a home besides the stage, the nightclub and the cultural fairs: the streets. Material: Cotton blend in deep sand color, with gold plated brass coin attachments.
